No. 73 Marquette Downs Illinois State, 4-3

MILWAUKEE - The No. 73 Marquette women's tennis team prevailed with a 4-3 victory over Illinois State Sunday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. Freshman Olga Fischer won her seventh straight singles match, while senior Robin Metzler and freshman Gillian Hush also earned singles wins to help Marquette improve to 8-3 overall.
The Golden Eagles earned the first point of the afternoon claiming two of three doubles matches. The Hush sisters cruised to an 8-2 win over Carmen Peters and Hannah Esker at No. 3, and sophomore Christina Ruiz and Metzler held on to a 9-8 win over Natalia Lech and Tanja Hrovatic at No. 2.
Illinois State evened the score, 1-1, after Franziska Steinhardt claimed the No. 3 singles slot by default over sophomore Rachael Hush.
Marquette answered with wins at No. 5 and 6. Metzler took care of Esker in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 and Gillian Hush downed Peters, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6.
Fischer captured the Golden Eagles' final win of the day at No. 2 in the form of a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Lech.
The Golden Eagles will open a three-match road tilt Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Wisconsin. Doubles play will begin at 5 p.m.
