Women's Tennis Defeated by No. 44 Illinois, 5-2

URBANA, ILL. - The Marquette University women's tennis team (6-2) fell to No. 44 Illinois Sunday, 5-2 to conclude its three-game BIG TEN road swing.

"We played much better today and definitely got better," head coach Jody Bronson said." "We had chances to take the match and just didn't win the big points when we needed. Very proud of my team today."

The Fighting Illini (3-2) claimed the doubles point in three close matches. The Golden Eagles' No. 1 doubles pair, senior Ana Pimienta and junior Erin Gebes dropped their match 4-6, as did freshman Paula Tormos Sanchez and sophomore Diana Tokar.

Three of the six singles contests came down to a third game. Pimienta, who won 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, and Gebes, who claimed a victory 6-2, 3-6, 10-8, won MU's two singles matches on the day.

Tokar played the longest match at the Atkins Tennis Center, but ultimately fell to her opponent in a tiebreaker 6-1, 4-6, 6-7 (7-2).

The Golden Eagles hit the court next weekend after concluding their three-game road trip 1-2. Next Saturday, Feb. 21 Western Michigan and IUPUI will visit the Helfear Tennis Stadium for a doubleheader beginning at 10:00 a.m. and 5 p.m. Central time respectively.
