Marquette Upsets No. 48 Iowa, 4-3

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's tennis team earned a pair of wins Saturday at Helfaer Tennis Stadium first upsetting No. 48 Iowa, 4-3, before easily dismantling Northern Illinois, 7-0. The wins help the Golden Eagles improve to 6-3 overall in dual play.
Marquette got the morning started by taking two of three doubles matches against Iowa en route to the first point of the day. Gillian Hush and Chelsea Utting defeated Christina Harazin and Jessica Cohen at No. 3, 8-3, and Rachael Hush and Christina Ruiz pulled out an 8-6 win over Sonja Molnar and Jessica Young at No. 1.
The Hawkeyes quickly tied the score, 1-1, with Sonja Molnar's win at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, over Kelly Barry. Marquette countered with wins at No. 4 and No. 6 to go ahead 3-1 as Paola Calderon defeated Alexis Dorr, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 and Chelsea Utting took down Christina Harazin, 7-6 (7), 7-0, at No. 6.
Christina Ruiz used three sets to defeat Jessica Cohen at No. 4, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, and secure Marquette's upset win over the Hawkeyes.
Against Northern Illinois, Marquette surrendered just two set points in doubles play and made quick work of the Huskies in singles action to claim its second win of the day.
In singles play, the Golden Eagles won all six singles points and rolled to their second victory of the day. Gillian Hush bounced back after her morning loss to Iowa's Lynne Poggensee-Wei to dominate NIU's Marina Schnapp in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3. Calderon recorded her second win of the day, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4, while Barry helped clinch the win with her 6-2, 6-1 win over Emily Rogers at the top singles spot.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at Wisconsin.
