Golden Eagles Fall, 4-3, to Iowa State in Second Loss of the Weekend

Feb. 20, 2010

The Marquette women's tennis team fell for the second time in as many days Saturday afternoon. Iowa State recorded a narrow 4-3 victory over the Golden Eagles on a neutral court.

Marquette controlled the doubles point early, as the No. 1 team of junior Christina Ruiz and Rachael Hush and the No. 2 duo of sophomores Paola Calderon and Olga Fischer defeated their Cyclone opponents, 8-4, each.

In singles, Calderon tallied a huge win against Erin Karonis at No. 1, 6-4, 6-1, her fourth of the season. The loss was just the second of the season for Karonis, a reigning All-Big 12 selection.

Classmate Gillian Hush was the other Golden Eagle to record a win in singles play, defeating Liza Wischer 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5. Hush improves to a 9-3 record in singles dual play to lead MU.

Marquette improves its all-time series record against ISU to 5-0.

With the loss, Marquette falls to 7-5 on the season. The Golden Eagles are undefeated in Milwaukee, but a combined 1-5 at away and neutral sites.
