Feb. 20, 2013
MADISON, Wis.- - The Marquette women's tennis team (9-3) extended its winning streak to three matches on Wednesday evening with a 4-3 victory over in state rival, Wisconsin (1-6). Sophomore Ana Pimienta came from behind in singles play to clinch the match for the Golden Eagles.
"We really struggled in doubles today," head coach Jody Bronson said. "We came out firing in singles play and everybody played at another level. This is the toughest win, coming from behind, and Ana played incredibly tough to bounce back and clinch the match for us."
After MU dropped all three doubles matches, singles play became a tight contest. Freshman Erin Gebes won at the fourth singles spot with a 6-3, 6-3 decision and classmates Aleeza Kanner and Vanessa Foltinger won their respective matches at the fifth and sixth spots. Pimienta won her first set at No. 1 singles, 6-4 before dropping a 6-7 (5-7) spot in the second set. She came from behind in the third set to claim a 6-4 victory and help give the Golden Eagles the victory.
Marquette will travel to Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 23 and face the Hawkeyes at 1 p.m. CT.
