Feb. 22, 2009
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Freshman Olga Fischer improved her singles win streak to 10 matches as the No. 75 Marquette women's tennis team earned a pair of road wins this weekend sweeping Villanova, 7-0 on Friday before defeating Rutgers, 4-3, Sunday afternoon. The wins help Marquette improve to 10-4 overall, 3-0 in BIG EAST play.
The Golden Eagles started off the match winning the doubles point. Freshman Paola Calderon and Moore teamed at No. 1 to take down Arlak and Christine Tran, 8-4. The Hush sister duo earned its fifth straight doubles victory by taking care of Jennifer Holzberg and Morgan Ivey at No. 3, 8-5.
Fischer defeated Katherine Arlak, 6-3, 6-3 at to improve to 8-0 at No. 2.
"This was a tough weekend, but we pulled through and played really well," said head coach Jody Bronson. "We stayed focused throughout. We knew it was going to be very tough to win at Rutgers, and it was. We started off well winning the doubles point and fought through singles. We saw players today that don't have a lot of experience step up and win matches."
Marquette used its depth Sunday to defeat the Scarlet Knights as it was without sophomore Kylie Moore in singles action and looked to freshman Gillian Hush at No. 6 singles. Hush pulled through with the deciding win over Morgan Ivey, 6-1, 6-4.
"Gillian was under a lot of pressure to win that match. It was something she hasn't experience since getting here because she hasn't play very many singles matches. I'm proud of her play. It was a great victory for her," said Bronson.
Rounding out singles play with a win was senior Robin Metzler who cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Maryana Milchutsky at No. 5.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 28 when they host No. 33 Illinois at Helfaer Tennis Stadium at 11 a.m.
