MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- The Marquette University tennis squad continued its excellent season on Saturday with a 4-1 victory over Iowa State played at the University of Minnesota. The Golden Eagles improve to 8-2 this season with the win.
The No. 1 doubles tandem of Ana Pimienta and Erin Gebes continued their dominance with a hard-fought 6-4 victory after many back-and-forth points. The duo is now 9-1 in doubles action this season. Ali Dawson and Aleeza Kanner clinched the doubles point for Marquette with a 6-3 victory on the No. 2 court.
In singles action, Vanessa Foltinger defeated Caroline Andersen, 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 6 position, while Paula Tormos Sanchez battled back from a deficit in her second set to win her No. 5 match, 6-2, 7-6 and earn the third point for the Golden Eagles. Marquette clinched the match victory as Pimienta used heavy hitting at the No. 1 position and battled through to a 6-1, 7-5 victory on the No. 1 court. Gebes and Diana Tokar did not need to finish their singles matches as the Golden Eagles had already earned the team victory.
"The match was a hard fought battle as every game and set was tough to earn," head coach Jody Bronson said. "Iowa State really played hard and pushed us today. They have a lot of players with big shots and have very good games. The coaching staff is very good and really prepared their team well for today's match. We are happy to come away with a victory against a very strong team."
Marquette will face No. 70 Minnesota on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT to conclude its weekend of matches.
