Women's Tennis Cruises to a 7-0 Defeat of Connecticut

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team had little trouble the Connecticut as it cruised to a 7-0 win Sunday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 11-5 overall and stay perfect in BIG EAST Conference play with a 4-0 mark.
"This is a big win for us to stay undefeated in the conference. We took a strong loss to Illinois yesterday and it was great to bounce back today," said head coach Jody Bronson. "We had great energy with everyone was extremely fired up and ready to play Connecticut today. Our communication in doubles was great and we came out and played really well in singles. We wanted to see different players at different positions and what they could do. I thought all of the players were confident and responded well to the pressure."
The Golden Eagles started off strong in doubles play winning at all three positions. The No. 3 duo of freshman Gillian Hush and junior Maggie Wilson were the first duo off the court taking care of and Katie Mortiz and Emily Searle, 8-1. Senior Robin Metzler and sophomore Christina Ruiz followed with a 8-2 win over Kelley LoRusso and Allison Campitiello at No. 1 to secure the doubles point and go ahead 1-0. Freshman Olga Fischer and sophomore Kylie Moore rounded out doubles play with an 8-5 win over BreAnn Cheung and Katie Mortiz, 8-5.
Marquette shuffled the line-up in singles play moving Fischer to No. 1, Ruiz to No. 2, Moore to No. 3 and Metzler to No. 4, while junior Elly Strother played her fourth dual match of the season at No. 6. The Golden Eagles responded with quick wins at the bottom half of the lineup. Strother had little trouble with her Connecticut counterpart Jennifer Marotta and earned a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 6. Metzler was next off the court after she took care of Mortiz, 6-2, 6-1, followed by Hush, who clinched the fourth team point of the afternoon, with win over Searle, 6-1, 6-2.
The Golden Eagles continued to cruise as Moore downed Cheung, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3, and Fischer returned to her winning ways with a 6-1, 6-3 win over LoRusso at No. 1.
Ruiz capped the day coming from behind to defeat Campitiello, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 at No. 2.
The Golden Eagles will head to Alabama for matches with Alabama and Samford on March 9 and March 11, respectively.
