Women's Tennis Defeats Miami (Ohio), 5-2

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team won the doubles point and never looked back as it took down Miami (Ohio) Wednesday afternoon, 5-2, at the Helfaer Tennis Center. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 9-6 overall on the season. The Golden Eagles came out energized and pulled out the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to go ahead 1-0. After the No. 2 duo of Maggie Wilson and Olga Fischer fell 8-1, Christina Ruiz and Rachael Hush beat Stephanie Danesis and Megan Martzolf, 8-4, at No. 1. Paola Calderon and Gillian Hush held on to defeat Reikie Honiball and Cara Wald at No. 3, 9-8 (4) to secure the first point of the day. The Golden Eagles' energy carried over to singles play as it jumped out to a 3-1 lead thanks to wins at No. 5 and No. 6. Ruiz was the first Golden Eagle off the court as she took care of Britney Larson, 6-2, 6-2. Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week Gillian Hush followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Wald at No. 6. Kelly Barry sealed the victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Danesis at No. 2.
Rachael Hush earned the Gold Eagles' fifth and final point of the day as she downed Honiball, 6-4, 7-6 at No. 4. The Golden Eagles will open a seven-match road trip Saturday, March 6 at Cornell. Doubles play in Ithaca, N.Y. will begin at 11 a.m. CT. Marquette 5, Miami (Ohio) 2
