Women's Tennis Downs Cincinnati, 5-2

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Marquette women's tennis team got its first victory in five tries, defeating Cincinnati, 5-2, but was swept by no. 50 Western Michigan, 7-0 to cap the weekend at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Mich. In the win over Cincinnati, the Golden Eagles used singles wins from sophomores Maria Calbeto and Erin Watkins and junior Dominika Dabrowski at the first through third spots and freshman Robin Metzler at no. 6 singles. Marquette was also successful in capturing the doubles point with the tandems of Calbeto and junior Francina Bonnelly at no. 1 doubles defeating Cincinnati's Jenny Rowen and Lindsay Willeford, 8-1, and Dabrowski and Metzler defeating Arundel and Reasoner, 8-3, at no. 2 doubles. Calbeto earned a convincing win over Elizabeth Young, 6-3, 6-1. Watkins battled Willeford to a 7-5, 6-2 decision, while Dabrowski came from behind to defeat Rowen, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Against the Broncos, Marquette got strong play from Calbeto as she took her first set to a tie breaker, but couldn't hold on as she was defeated by Malena Remynse, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 at no. 1 singles. In doubles play, the Golden Eagles were unable to come up with a win. The duo of Dabrowski and Metzler at the no. 2 position took Reedhina Parekh and Kerstin Pahl to a tie breaker but ended up losing 9-8 (9-7). The Golden Eagles open a nine match home stand when Ohio State visits the Helfaer Tennis Stadium on Friday, March 5. Marquette 5, Cincinnati 2 Singles
