PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Marquette University women's tennis team earned its second straight road win over a fellow BIG EAST Conference team Sunday afternoon at Rutgers, 4-3. The Golden Eagles improve to 10-4 overall on the season.
"We fought for every point to day and I couldn't be prouder of my team," said head coach Jody Bronson. " We were down in doubles but came through to win the first point. The doubles point was so key to win this match. I give the ladies a lot of credit for not giving up. They had their backs up against the wall and played tough throughout the day. Everyone stepped up today and we earned another good win on the road, today."
The Golden Eagles claimed all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day. Olga Fischer and Rocio Diaz teamed to take down Stefania Balasa and Vanessa Petrini, 8-3, at No. 3. Chelsea Utting and Gillian Hush followed with a win at No. 2 over Morgan Ivey and Leonora Slatnick, 9-7, to secure the doubles point.
The Scarlet Knights tied the score, 3-3, with wins at No. 6 and No. 1, leaving the match to be decided by Fischer at No. 2. Fischer pulled out a three-set win after she dropped her first set, 5-7. Fischer rallied to win the second and third sets, 7-6 (4) and 6-1, to give the Golden Eagles the team win, 4-3.
The Golden Eagles continue their month-long road trip at USF on Monday, March 14 at 10 a.m. CT.
