Marquette Defeats Samford, 5-2
March 9, 2009
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Behind wins from the middle portion of its lineup, the Marquette women's tennis team earned a 5-2 win at Samford Monday afternoon. The win helps Marquette improve to 12-5 overall.
"We played hard today and it was really good to win outdoors," said head coach Jody Bronson. "This was our first match outside of the dual season and we didn't play as smart as we could have. Although its great to win, and ultimately that is the goal, I still believe there are things we need to improve upon."
After claiming the doubles point with a win at No. 1 and Samford forfeit at No. 3, the Golden Eagles earned four straight singles points at No. 6 (by default), No. 5, No. 4, and No. 3 to defeat the Bulldogs.
Junior Elly Strother started off singles play with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win over Beth Erwin at No. 5. Sophomore Rachael Hush clinched the match win by taking down Jessica Diamond at No. 4, 6-3, 6-2. Senior Robin Metzler captured Marquette's final win of the day at No. 3. Metzler earned a three-set victory over Stephanie Parkison, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6).
At the top of the line-up both freshmen Olga Fischer and Paola Calderon rallied after first set losses to win their second sets, but fell short in tie-breakers. Calderon fell 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) to Taylor Morgan at No. 1, while Fischer was tripped up by Andrie Meiring, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9), at No. 2.
The Golden Eagles will continue play outdoors in the Yellowhammer State at No. 33 Alabama Wednesday, March 11 in Tuscaloosa.
