Golden Eagles Fall to No. 16 Alabama, 7-0
March 11, 2009
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - No. 16 Alabama proved to be too much for the Marquette women's tennis team Wednesday afternoon as the Crimson Tide downed the Golden Eagles, 7-0, at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. Marquette moves to 12-6 overall, while Alabama remains perfect at 11-0.
"I thought we battled well today, but had too many mental errors based on the conditions," said head coach Jody Bronson. "We need to be able to develop the point and finish. Alabama was doing that at all spots and we need to do that at all spots. At all of the positions we to recognize the things that will help us elevate our game and win those points."
Alabama went ahead 1-0 after claiming the doubles point, but it was not without a fight. Marquette nearly pulled out the first point of the match with a win at No. 3 from the Hush sister duo. Freshman Olga Fischer and senior Robin Metzler came close at No. 2, but were upended by Alice Tunaru and Taylor Lindsey, 8-6.
In singles play, the Golden Eagles did not back down, but were defeated in all six singles matches. Fischer, Metzler and freshman Paola Calderon came close, but fell short.
After losing the first set 6-1, Metzler rallied back forcing a second set tie-breaker, but ultimately fell 7-6, 9-7, at No. 5 to Taylor Lindsey. Fischer kept it close in her first set, 7-5, but dropped her second set 6-1 No. 2 to Paulina Bigos.
In the final match of the afternoon, Calderon went toe-to-toe with No. 82 Tiffany Welcher at No. 1 after dropping the first set, 6-1. Calderon won the second set, 7-6 (7-2) to force the deciding tie-breaker, but couldn't hold on falling, 10-4.
Despite the loss, Bronson was proud of the way Calderon fought for each point.
"Paola played well today especially in her second set. She battled throughout. We need all of our players to elevate their games the way Paola did today," said Bronson.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, March 20 when they host Western Michigan at 1 p.m. at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
