March 20, 2009
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team pulled off its second upset of the season over a ranked foe Friday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The Golden Eagles defeated No. 56 Western Michigan, 4-3. With the win, MU snaps the Broncos' 40-match unbeaten streaked over non-ranked non-conference foes, and improves to 13-6 overall.
"Before we played today, I challenged this team to show me how much heart they had, and the team prove it today. I couldn't be more proud of these players," said head coach Jody Bronson. We knew how disciplined Western Michigan is and how hard they fight. We have been on the other end so many times against this team, but today was different. We came out and fought for every point. Olga was so poised and composed down the stretch. Her play in doubles with Robin (Metzler) by winning doubles point for us set the tone for singles."
The Golden Eagles clinched the doubles point with two hard-fought wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Freshman Paola Calderon and sophomore Kylie Moore got the first win at No. 1, 8-6, over Ashley Moccia and Jenny Nalepa.
Freshman Olga Fischer and senior Robin Metlzer teamed at No. 2 and took down Emily Dudzik and Yumi Matsuto, 9-8 (7-3).
The intense play carried over to singles where Western Michigan tied the match, 1-1, when Kerstin Pahl defeated Calderon, 6-1, 6-2. Marquette took a 3-1 lead when Metzler and sophomore Rachael Hush earned decisive wins at No. 5 and No. 4, respectively. Bronson was pleased with their efforts and noted that each played the best tennis of the season.
The Broncos tied the match as Moore dropped a hard fought decision at No. 3, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4) to Jenny Nalepa and freshman Gillian Hush fell, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 at No. 6.
However, it was a poised Fischer who pulled out a three-set thriller at No. 2, to clinch the 4-3 win for the Golden Eagles. Fischer defeated Emily Dudzik, 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 6-2 in the final match of the day.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on March 28 when they host a doubleheader with St. John's and Wright State at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. Doubles play against the Red Storm will begin at 9 a.m.
