Golden Eagles Fly Past Illinois State, 5-2

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's tennis team won the doubles point and four singles matches en route to a 5-2 decision over Illinois State Friday evening at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The Golden Eagles improve to 10-5 overall.
Marquette clinched the doubles point in dramatic fashion when the No. 2 duo of Ana Pimienta and Rocio Diaz won the final two points of the match to top Ariane Maack and Phyllis Tigges, 9-7. Gillian Hush and Olga Fischer was the other tandem to come away victorious as they defeated Aniko Kiss and Emmie Marx, 8-4 at No. 1.
In singles action, Vanessa Foltinger was the first Golden Eagle off the court after she cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Hannah Esker at No. 6 singles.
After Fischer fell 6-3, 6-4, to Kiss at No. 1, Diaz and Ali Dawson each won their respective matches to secure the match win for the Golden Eagles. Diaz took down Tigges, 6-3, 7-5, and Dawson held on for a 6-0, 7-5 win over Carolina Abello.
Rounding out the scoring for MU was Ana Pimienta with her come-from-behind effort to defeat Stefanie Youngberg, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-0) at No. 5.
The Golden Eagles will close out the weekend at No. 17 Notre Dame on Sunday. Doubles play is set to begin at 11 am. CT.
