The Marquette women’s tennis team (10-8) got back to winning ways on Sunday afternoon with a commanding 6-1 victory over Illinois State at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
The win snapped a five-match losing streak for the Golden Eagles and was the first home match they have played since Feb. 17.
“It was a great win today,” head coach Jody Bronson said. “We started strong with a doubles win and fought tough during singles to win the match 6-1. I am very proud of our team today.”
MU dominated in doubles action with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, which claimed the point.
Freshman Erin Gebes continued her hot streak with a victory at No. 2 singles over Phyllis Tigges, 6-2, 6-2. Gebes has now won 13 of her last 15 singles matches. Classmate Aina Hernandez Soler fought back after dropping her second set and claimed a 6-2, 6-7, 7-3 victory in the fourth position to give Marquette another point.
