March 26, 2011
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Despite controlling play early on, the Marquette University women's tennis team dropped a hard fought match at Louisville, 4-3, Saturday afternoon. The loss is MU's third straight as the Golden Eagles stand at 10-7 overall on the season.
"We knew how tough Louisville was going to play us," said head coach Jody Bronson. "I felt we were very prepared and focused for the match, but we lost a couple of close ones that otherwise would have turned it around. I am proud of the ladies for fighting hard and having great energy."
The Golden Eagles made quick work of the Cardinals in doubles action with a pair of 8-1 wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Christina Ruiz and Rachael Hush secured the sweep with a 9-7 win over Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine at No. 1.
Louisville won the next two matches at No. 3 and No. 6 to go head 3-2 before Christina Ruiz tied the score at three points apiece following her come-from-behind effort, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, over Gabrielle Duncan.
In the match decider, Shine held on for a close three-set victory, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4, over Olga Fischer at No. 2 for the final team point of the afternoon.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Sunday at Cincinnati. Doubles play will begin at 9 a.m. ET/8 a.m. CT.
