March 27, 2011
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Marquette University women's tennis team won the doubles point and earned three singles wins to top Cincinnati, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Western Tennis & Fitness Club. The win snaps the MU's three-match skid and helps it improve to 11-7 overall.
"Our match today probably wasn't our best in terms of execution, but again, we fought hard and scrapped to get the win," said head coach Jody Bronson. "There were a few matches that we lost the first set, but then rallied to take it to three. Paola had a great comeback to win her match after dropping her first set. She really fought hard to come away with the win. Overall, it was a good conference weekend of play. The fight was in us the whole way."
The Golden Eagles swept all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day. Christina Ruiz and Rachael Hush continued their dominance at the top singles slot and earned an 8-6 win over Caitlin O'Gara and Lindsey Lonergan. Hush and Ruiz have won their last five straight doubles matches, and are 11-1 in their last 12 matches.
Olga Fischer and Rocio Diaz teamed to top Ksenia Slynko and Ashleigh Witte, 8-4, at No. 2, and Gillian Hush and Paola Calderon took down Safiyya Ismail and Jasmine Lee, 8-6, at No. 3 to complete the sweep.
In singles action, Calderon knocked off Witte in a three-set thriller, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, Gillian Hush easily dismantled Lonergan 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, and Rachael Hush earned a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Ismail at No. 6 singles.
The Golden Eagles open a three-match homestand Saturday, April 2, against Chicago State. Doubles action will begin at 11 a.m. at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
