INDIANAPOLIS--The Marquette women's tennis team (10-7) earned its first BIG EAST victory on Saturday with a 7-0 sweep at Butler.
The Golden Eagles got rolling with a doubles sweep as the No. 2 tandem of Ali Dawson and Aleeza Kanner finished first with an 8-3 victory, followed by Diana Tokar and Paula Tormos Sanchez winning their third consecutive doubles match on the No. 3 court, 8-3. No. 1 duo, Ana Pimienta and Erin Gebes got back to winning ways with an 8-1 victory.
Pimienta gave MU a 2-0 lead as she bested her opponent, 6-2, 6-1 shortly before Gebes secured a 6-2, 7-5 win at the No. 2 position. Tokar clinched the match for the Golden Eagles with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win on the No. 3 court.
Dawson fought through at No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-0 win, while Tormos earned her win at the No. 5 position, 6-3, 7-6, and Vanessa Foltinger secured the sweep 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
"We came out fast in our doubles matches, which is always a good sign for us," head coach Jody Bronson said. "The team played smart tennis and the result in doubles showed. Our singles matches were hard fought, just like the doubles victories. Butler gave us a very good test today and they are coached very well. We had to dig deep to win. Their team fights hard for every point and they never give up. I am very proud of our team today as we showed the type of resiliency that wins matches. This is the type of win that helps us continue to build our confidence as a team and individually as well."
Marquette will travel to No. 36 Notre Dame and face the Fighting Irish at 11 a.m. CT in South Bend.
