MILWAUKEE-- The Marquette women's tennis team (9-7) opened the first of two home matches this weekend with a 4-3 victory over BIG EAST opponent, Xavier, Saturday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

The Golden Eagles got on the board first with the doubles point. Senior Rocio Diaz and sophomore Erin Gebes finished first with an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, but Xavier took No. 1 doubles, setting up junior Ana Pimienta and sophomore Aina Hernandez Soler to clinch the doubles point with an 8-5 victory in their match.

A. Hernandez Soler claimed her singles match over Lizzie Oosterbaan, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles, while the Musketeers took victories at the No. 1 and No. 5 courts. Down the stretch MU needed a win in two of the final three matches being played. Junior Ali Dawson came back in her match to defeat Cristina Di Lorenzo, 7-6, 7-5 and classmate Vanessa Foltinger fought through the end for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Daniella Patton at No. 4 singles, which clinched the win for the Golden Eagles.

Marquette returns to the court on Sunday to take on conference-foe, Butler beginning at Noon, Central time.
