Women's Tennis Cruises to a Pair of Wins Saturday
April 2, 2011
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's tennis team earned a pair of decisive wins Saturday at Helfaer Tennis Team. The Golden Eagles defeated Chicago State, 6-0, and IUPUI, 6-1. The wins help MU improve to 13-7 overall on the season.
"I was really proud of our kids today. We had to really play well in these matches," said head coach Jody Bronson. "Even if we struggled a little bit initially, we finished strong in the second set. For the most part we did a great job of pushing forward, closing it out and not letting the match go any longer. We were a little depleted today, but that is why we do things the way we do in practice. We moved our doubles teams around a little, so when we have situations like this, everyone has practiced that and knows where to step in. Today, people played a lot of different positions and with different partners. These are our last three matches before our big push the next few weeks against conference teams. We knew we had to get everything fixed today (and tomorrow) in order excel in the next few weeks."
The Golden Eagles got the day started with the 6-0 win over Chicago State. Marquette took care of the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Christina Ruiz and Rachael Hush downed Juan Rosalina Tejoprayitno and Juan Rosalia Tejoprayitno, 8-2, at No. 1, and Olga Fischer and Rocio Diaz took care of Peggy Moore and Dian Mayasari, 8-5, at No. 2.
Marquette continued to roll in singles play winning at five of the six positions. Marquette and Chicago State both double forfeited at No. 6 singles leaving neither team to earn that point. Fischer earned her first of two wins at No. 1 Saturday, 6-1, 6-4, over Mayasari. Kelly Barry did the same with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Juan Rosalia Tejoprayitno at No. 2, as did Chelsea Utting and Rocio Diaz with wins at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. Hush shutout Mista Townsell, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 in her lone singles match of the day.
Against IUPUI, Marquette cruised to the doubles point giving up only five points overall. Fischer and Diaz shut out Lee Matthews and Vanessa Whyte, 8-0, at No. 2, Utting and Barry took down Jesika Bays and Shelby Hullett at No. 3, 8-3, to secure the point, and Hush and Ruiz earned their seventh straight win, a 8-2 decision over Danielle Haefele and Alisha Cummings at No. 1.
IUPUI tied the score due to Marquette defaulting at No. 6, but the Golden Eagles were dominant earning the remaining five wins. Fischer defeated Haefele, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1, Barry downed Hullett at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2, Utting beat Whyte at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1, Ruiz bested Cummings at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1, and Diaz took down Matthews, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5.
