April 3, 2011
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's tennis team earned its fourth straight win in the form of a 7-0 decision over Illinois State Sunday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 14-7 overall on the season.
"All that we talk about is how to come out, how to start our match. We want to play ahead and not from behind, and we were able to do that today," said head coach Jody Bronson. "In a few matches, we fell behind in the second set, but we were able to fight our way back. We have talked all year about closing matches out, so even when it goes to a third set, or if we are behind in the second set, how important it is to just continue to fight through it. We fought through a couple matches today. That is what it is going to be like when we play our conference matches, so I was very happy that everyone closed out there matches."
The Golden Eagles dominated doubles play claiming all three wins and giving up just five total points. Rachael Hush and Christina Ruiz pushed their win streak to eight straight with an 8-2 win over Aniko Kiss and Carolina Abello at No. 1. Olga Fischer and Rocio Diaz also earned and 8-2 win at No. 2 over Phyllis Tigges and Arianne Maack, while Chelsea Utting and Gillian Hush defeated Hannah Esker and Sarah Streitz, 8-1, at No. 3.
