Women's Tennis Falls at Wichita State, 5-2, Saturday Night

April 4, 2010

WICHITA, Kansas -

On Saturday night, the Marquette women's tennis team fell early, losing the doubles point to Wichita State, and could not rebound for the win, falling 5-2.

The Golden Eagles' points came at No. 3 and No. 6 singles with Kelly Barry and Gillian Hush, respectively. Freshman Barry defeated Lenore Lazaroiu, 6-3, 6-1, and sophomore Hush blanked Iasmine Carpen, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Gillian Hush and classmate Paola Calderon recorded a win at No. 3 doubles, 8-4, but neither the No. 1 or No. 2 doubles pairs could clinch the doubles point for Marquette.

The match at Wichita State was a homecoming of sorts for junior Rachael Hush and sophomore Gillian Hush, natives of Wichita, Kansas. Rachael fell at No. 1 doubles before retiring from her No. 5 singles match due to injury.

With the loss, Marquette falls to an even 11-11 record with three matches remaining until the BIG EAST Tournament, hosted by Notre Dame.
