Golden Eagles Fall 7-0 to No. 3 Notre Dame
April 5, 2009
CHICAGO, Ill. - No. 3 Notre Dame proved to be too much for the Marquette women's tennis team Sunday afternoon as the Fighting Irish downed the Golden Eagles, 7-0, at Lakeshore Athletic Club in Chicago. With the loss, the Golden Eagles move to 15-8 overall, 5-2 in BIG EAST play.
Despite the loss, head coach Jody Bronson was pleased with the fight in the Golden Eagles and felt that this match and Saturday's match against DePaul will help them prepare for the BIG EAST Tournament which begins Thursday, April 16.
"This was a great match in terms of the high level play we were up against. We were forced to be aggress yet consistent. I believe that matches like these will help us recognize what we have to do to win the BIG EAST Tournament," said Bronson.
In doubles play, Notre Dame took all three doubles matches en route to the doubles point and the 7-0 victory. The No. 3 duo of Rachael and Gillian Hush came closest to pulling out a win, but fell short, 8-6, to Katie Potts and Cosmina Ciobanu.
"Those two really stepped up today. I am proud of their effort. They were so close to pulling it out, but just fell short," said Bronson.
In singles play, the Golden Eagles fought hard but fell in all six singles matches. Overall, Notre Dame outscored Marquette 72-20 in singles play. The Golden Eagles will close out the regular season at Stetson on Monday, April 13, before heading to the BIG EAST Conference Tournament April 16-19, in Tampa, Fla.
