Women's Tennis Drops Final Regular Season Match to Louisville, 6-1
April 15, 2006
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Maria Calbeto tallied a hard-fought win at no. 1 singles, but it was not enough as the Marquette women's tennis team dropped its last match of the regular season, 6-1, to 70th-ranked Louisville at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The loss puts the Golden Eagles at 9-13, 2-5 BIG EAST for the season. "This is not the way we wanted to end the season," said head coach Jody Bronson. "Not winning the doubles point really hurt us. We just were unable bounce back and Louisville took advantage of it." The Cardinals started out strongly by winning the doubles point. Maria Klokotzky and Robyn White made short work of Calbeto and freshman Lauren Little with an 8-4 win at No 1. At No.3, Natalie Laszkowski and Suzanna Gracanin beat junior Dominika Dabrowski and freshman Robin Metzler, 8-4. The Cardinals swept the doubles point with a win at No. 2 as sophomore Erin Watkins and junior Francina Bonnelly were unable pull off the win and were defeated by Natalia Baez and Bianca Gorbea, 8-6. Louisville quickly pushed its lead to 3-0 as Lazkowski took down Bonnelly, 6-0, 6-2, at no. 5 singles and Metzler fell to Baez, 6-4, 6-2, at the no. 6 spot. The Cardinals clinched the match win when Watkins was defeated by Gorbea, 6-4, 6-1, at no. 3 singles. Calbeto gave Marquette its lone win of the day and handed Klokotzky a 6-4, 6-2 loss at the top singles spot. "I am proud of the way Beba (Maria Calbeto) played. She fought for every point," added Bronson. In the final match of the day, Little was unable to hold on after winning the first set, 6-3, and was defeated 6-1, 6-4 in the final two sets to Robyn White.
The Golden Eagles are idle until the BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP hosted by South Florida next week in Tampa. #70 Louisville 6, Marquette 1
