DePaul Edges Marquette on Senior Night, 4-3
April 15, 2011
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's tennis team's seven-match win streak was halted Friday evening at Helfaer Tennis Stadium by rival DePaul, 4-3. The loss drops Marquette to 17-8 overall on the season, while the Blue Demons improve to 12-9 overall.
"We had our opportunity to win the doubles point and couldn't snag it," said head coach Jody Bronson. I thought our seniors played great. They played from behind and didn't give up. After we lost the doubles point, we knew we would have to come out focused and prepared in singles. I thought we did do that, but didn't execute the way we wanted to. I'm proud of the team for its fight and I know we will bounce back for Sunday's match against Notre Dame."
After a closely contested doubles point, DePaul took the early lead with 9-7 wins at both No. 2 and No. 3. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Rachael Hush and Christina Ruiz won their 11th straight match and came from behind to defeat Selma Salkovic and and Katarina Milinkovic, 8-6. The two were honored in a pre-match senior night ceremony.
Chelsea Utting was the first off the court in singles play and tied the score, 1-1, with her 6-0 straight set win over Samantha Kaneta at No. 6.
The Blue Demons earned the next two victories at Nos. 2 and 3 to go ahead 3-1. Gillian Hush kept Marquette in it with her win at No. 4, 6-3, 6-3 over Christina Raymond, but DePaul earned its final win at No. 1 a few moments later to secure the match win. Milinkovic registered the match-winning point by defeating Olga Fischer, 6-2, 6-2.
Ruiz took down Cali Guastfson, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5 for the Golden Eagles' final point of the evening.
The Golden Eagles will play their final match of the regular season on Sunday against No. 22 Notre Dame. Doubles action will begin at 10 a.m. at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
