April 17, 2011
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's team won the doubles point but were unable to come away with any singles wins in a 6-1 loss to No. 22 Notre Dame Sunday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The Golden Eagles cap the regular season 17-9 overall.
"We played a very good team today," said head coach Jody Bronson. "We needed to play a team like that for our last dual match, because it really pushed us to realize the level of play we need to be at for the conference tournament. Winning the doubles point was great for us. Rachael and Chris fought hard against a finely tuned team, which put pressure on our No. 2 and 3 teams to step up. I'm proud of them. They did just that and we were able to steal that point."
Marquette took the early lead after claiming two of three doubles wins. Gillian Hush and Chelsea Utting took down Jennifer Kellner and Julie Sabacinski at No. 3, 8-5, and Olga Fischer and Rocio Diaz clinched the point with their 8-6 win over Chrissie McGaffigan and Kristen Rafael at No. 2.
Notre Dame quickly went ahead 3-1 with wins at the top of the singles lineup. No. 5 Frilling downed Olga Fischer at No. 1, 6-3, 6-0, Paola Calderon fell to No. 64 Matthews at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1, and Rachael Hush was defeated by No. 95 Kellner at No. 3.
Rafael clinched the win for the the Fighting Irish with her win over Gillian Hush, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4.
The Golden Eagles will have the week off before traveling to Notre Dame, Ind., to play in the BIG EAST Conference Women's Tennis Championship.
