April 18, 2009
Tampa - The No. 4 seeded Marquette University men's and women's tennis teams both picked up victories on the second day of the 2009 BIG EAST Conference Championships Saturday afternoon in Tampa, Fla.
The men's team defeated Villanova 4-0 and the women's squad downed Syracuse 4-2. Each program will now play Sunday afternoon in the event's fifth-place match. Both teams finished fifth at the 2008 league tournament.
The Marquette men will take on No. 6 seed St. John's at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday, while the women will meet No. 3 seed USF at the same time. The Golden Eagles did not face either opponent during the regular season.
The MU men's squad claimed the valuable doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 following a slow start. Senior Trent Hagan claimed his second singles victory in as many days, downing Villanova's Alex Leeser 6-1, 6-1. Straight-set victories by junior Dusan Medan and freshman Jonathan Schwerin at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions, respectively, secured the team victory in just over two hours.
The women's team claimed the doubles point against Syracuse with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Senior Robin Metzler game MU a 2-0 advantage with a quick 6-1, 6-1 decision over SU's Ashley Spicer at the No. 5 spot. The victory by Metzler was her second of the tourney. She also earned a win against Rutgers on Friday afternoon.
Marquette's Paola Calderon wrapped up her victory shortly after Metzler, downing Syracuse freshman Emily Harman 6-2, 6-1 at the top spot. The Orange rallied for a pair of wins to close the cap to 3-2, but sophomore Rachael Hush was able to secure the deciding fourth point with a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.
