Marquette Falls to No. 5 Notre Dame, 6-1
April 18, 2010
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - No. 5 Notre Dame proved to be too much for the Marquette women's tennis team to handle as it fell 6-1 to the Fighting Irish Sunday at the Courtney Tennis Center. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 12-13 overall on the season.
Sophomore Olga Fischer scored MU's lone point of the match at No. 2 singles. Fischer pulled out a three-set win over Shannon Matthews, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0.
"The fact that we were without two of our singles player and top doubles team, I thought our team did an awesome job of stepping up and believing that they could accomplish something special, " said head coach Jody Bronson. "They had the opportunity to win, and we had some great matches. Kelly was right there, Olga won, a Maggie, who hasn't played a singles match all season, stepped up and competed fearlessly. It is a testament to the determination and effort that our players have been putting in all season. I am very proud of the way they played this weekend."
In doubles play, Notre Dame took all three doubles matches en route to the doubles point and an early lead.
In singles action, Notre Dame got quick wins at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 to secure the win.
Prior to Fischer's thrilling three-set win, freshman Kelly Barry came from behind to take No. 119 Chrissie McGaffigan to three sets, but ultimately came up short, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0.
The Golden Eagles will return to the Courtney Tennis Center for the BIG EAST Championships April 22-25. Pairings will be announced Monday by the league office.
