TAMPA, Fla. - The Marquette women's tennis team opened the 2013 BIG EAST Tennis Championship on a high note with a 4-0 defeat over Cincinnati on Thursday morning. The Golden Eagles are the No. 8 seed in the tournament held in Tampa, Fla. and hosted by USF.

The Golden Eagles swept doubles play as the tandem of sophomore Ali Dawson and freshman Aina Hernandez Soler played at No. 2 doubles and was the decisive victory with an 8-3 advantage over UC.

Freshman Erin Gebes made quick work of her Bearcat opponent at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3, and gave MU its second point of the day. With a 2-0 lead, the Golden Eagles needed just two more points to seal a victory, as the first team to reach four points won the match. Hernandez Soler claimed the next point for Marquette with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles, while freshman Vanessa Foltinger won her match at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-4 and gave the Golden Eagles the victory.

MU advances to the next round of the BIG EAST Championship and will face top-seed Notre Dame on Friday morning. The match will begin at 8 a.m. CT.
