MU Tennis Teams Finish Sixth At BIG EAST Championships

TAMPA, Fla. - The Marquette University men's and women's tennis teams concluded their respective 2008-09 campaigns with sixth-place finishes at the BIG EAST Conference Championships.
The MU men were defeated 4-1 by St. John's and the women were downed 4-3 by host USF. Both squads finished fifth in the 2008 tournament.
After dropping the doubles point with losses at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, the men's team was unable to sustain early momentum in singles play. Junior Dusan Medan was the lone player to collect a point, downing St. John's player Gustavo Loza, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 2 position. Medan finished the weekend 3-0 in singles action for Marquette.
St. John's was able to earn the three victories needed in singles play to capture fifth place.
The women's team opened the match by claiming the doubles point, earning victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The sister tandem of Rachel and Gillian Hush posted the first victory with an 8-3 win at No. 3 and the duo of Olga Fischer and Robin Metzler followed with an 8-4 decision at No. 2.
With USF able to claim three singles victories, the match would come down to the No. 1 position. MU freshman Paola Calderon kept it close in the first set but fell 6-4, and dropped the second set, 6-0, to USF's Irene Rehberger.
Metzler and Gillian Hush each took down their USF counterparts, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
Metzler finished the tournament 3-0 in singles play for the Golden Eagles. She finished the season 17-9 and capped her career 47-45 overall.
