South Bend, Ind. -
The Marquette University women’s tennis team opened play at the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Championship with a 4-0 victory over Connecticut Thursday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles are seeded fifth in the 12-team field, while the Huskies earned the No. 12 seed in the event, which is being hosted along with the men’s tourney by Notre Dame. The first team to collect four points advances in the bracket and any remaining matches still on court are suspended.
“I thought we played really well in doubles and set the tone for the match,” head coach Jody Bronson said. “We played aggressive and smart and that carried over to singles. With the format of the tournament, it’s important to get off the court as soon as possible.”
Marquette moved ahead 2-0 after a 6-3, 6-0 victory by Gillian Hush at No. 5 singles. Freshman Kelly Barry posted a straight-set decision at No. 3 singles and sophomore Olga Fischer sealed the win with a 6-2, 6-0 win over UConn’s Alli Campitiello at the No. 2 spot.
MU opened the match by claiming the valuable doubles point. Sophomores Gillian Hush and Paola Calderon earned a quick 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles and the tandem of junior Christina Ruiz and freshman Kelly Barry followed suit with an 8-3 decision at the No. 3 spot.
