MU Falls 4-3 In BIG EAST Tourney To Syracuse

The Marquette University women’s tennis team continued play at the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Championship with a tough 4-3 loss to Syracuse Friday afternoon at the Courtney Tennis Center.
The Golden Eagles are seeded fifth in the 12-team field, while the Orange earned the No. 4 seed in the event, which is being hosted along with the men’s tourney by Notre Dame. The first team to collect four points advances in the bracket and any remaining matches still on court are suspended.
MU opened play with a 4-0 win over Connecticut on Thursday and will now face No. 8 seed West Virginia on Saturday afternoon in the consolation bracket.
Posting singles victories for the Golden Eagles were sophomore Gillian Hush at No. 5 and freshman Kelly Barry at the No. 3 spot, which gave MU a 3-1 lead. The match came down to the No. 4 position, where junior Christina Ruiz dropped a tough three-set decision in a tiebreaker following a pair of Syracuse wins at the top two spots. Ruiz claimed the first set 6-4, but SU’s Allessondra Parra rallied 7-5, 7-6 (5) to win by the slimmest of margins.
Marquette claimed the doubles point with an impressive win at the No. 2 position. Syracuse posted an 8-2 decision at No. 1 and MU’s duo of Christina Ruiz and Kelly Barry earned an 8-3 win at the No. 3 spot to set up the deciding match. With No. 2 tied at 6-6, sophomores Gillian Hush and Paola Calderon broke their opposing squad and on serve claimed a 40-0 win in the deciding game.
