Marquette Falls 4-3 in Battle Against Xavier

FLUSHING, N.Y.- It was an exhausting battle to the end, but the No. 2 seeded Marquette women's tennis squad (13-11) fell to No. 3 Xavier, 4-3 in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament presented by New York Life at the USTA National Tennis Center Saturday morning.
The match lasted six hours and 15 minutes and came down to the final singles match. MU got off to a strong start easily picking up the doubles point. The duo of Aina Hernandez Soler and Ana Pimienta swept Xavier, 8-0, while Rocio Diaz and Erin Gebes picked up their 17th victory this season with an 8-3 decision, which clinched the doubles point for the Golden Eagles.
The Musketeers mounted a comeback in singles action picking up all four of their points. Junior Ali Dawson defeated Cristina Di Lorenzo, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 position, while Laia Hernandez Soler bested Lizzie Oosterbaan, 6-4, 7-6 at the No. 6 spot. In No. 2 singles, Gebes fought to a third set in her match, but fell, 6-4, 6-7, 5-7.
