MU Tops Connecticut in the First Round of the BIG EAST Championship
April 28, 2011
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Marquette University women's tennis team (18-9) opened play at the 2011 BIG EAST Championships with a 4-0 victory over Connecticut Thursday afternoon at the Eck Tennis Pavilion at South Bend, Ind.
The Golden Eagles, seeded fifth in the 12-team field, advance to face No. 4 seed Louisville at 11 a.m. CT on Friday afternoon at the Leeper Park Tennis Center. Poor weather conditions forced the tourney to move indoors and singles matches were played first. The first team to collect four points advances in the main draw.
"I thought we really came out focused today and it was evident in our result," head coach Jody Bronson said. "We told the team to be aggressive, take advantage of its opportunities and try to get off the court as quickly as possible. I was happy to see us accomplish all of those goals."
Marquette didn't drop a set on the afternoon and a pair of freshmen helped the squad secure the victory. Newcomer Chelsea Utting put MU ahead 1-0 by making quick work of UConn's Abby McKeon in a 6-0, 6-1 decision at the No. 5 position. Juniors Olga Fisher and Gillian Hush followed up with straight-set victories of their own to push MU in front 3-0.
Freshman Rocio Diaz, making her conference tournament debut, clinched the team win with a 6-4, 6-0 dismantling of Lucy Nutting at No. 6 singles.
With improved weather conditions forecast for Friday, all tourney action is expected to move to multiple outdoor facilities beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
