April 29, 2011
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The fifth-seeded Marquette University women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championship following an 4-2 win over No. 4 seed Louisville Friday afternoon at Leeper Park Tennis Center.
The Golden Eagles (19-9) will face top seed Notre Dame on Saturday at Noon ET/11 a.m. CT at Courtney Tennis Center. Notre Dame topped No. 8 seed Georgetown earlier in the day, 4-0, to advance to the semifinals.
"I'm really proud of these ladies for stepping up, taking charge and believing in themselves and their teammates," said head coach Jody Bronson. "We came out a little nervous after having lost to Louisville earlier in the season, but winning the doubles point calmed those nerves and we were able to focus in singles. We know our strengths in our games, and if we keep doing what we do best, we really play well."
The Golden Eagles grabbed the early advantage by winning the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Gillian Hush and Chelsea Utting teamed to take down Sonia Bokhari and Sarah Miller, 8-5, at No. 3, and Olga Fischer and Rocio Diaz secured the first point of the day by defeating Stefanie Villajuan and Amelia Harris, 8-4, at No. 2.
In singles play, Louisville earned two quick wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to go ahead 2-1, but the bottom of MU's lineup responded with decisions at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 to put the match away.
Christina Ruiz took care of Gabrielle Duncan at No. 5, 6-4, 6-0, Chelsea Utting pulled off a thrilling 7-5, 7-6 (4) win over Bokhari at No. 6, and with an ace on her final point of the afternoon, Gillian Hush clinched the win for the Golden Eagles at No. 4, 6-4, 6-0, over Sarah Miller.
