MU Completes Day One at the 36th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic

MILWAUKEE- The Marquette University men's and women's tennis teams opened their respective 2011-12 campaigns at the 36th Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic, hosted by the Town Club in Fox Point, Wis.

The eight-team field includes four men's and women's programs and the event features three days of singles and doubles action on the facility's clay courts. The men's participants are Marquette, Ball State, Northwestern and Wisconsin, while the women's competitors are MU, Kansas State, South Carolina and Western Michigan.

The Marquette men's team opened play with singles action against Ball State and claimed each of the top four matches in the nine-person lineup. Earning victories for the Golden Eagles were Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley, Dan Mamalat, Logon Collins and Otavio Perim. Collins claimed a marathon win, outlasting BSU's Alex Brym 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 (10-5).

Freshmen David Packowitz, James Stark, Cameron Tehrani and Vukasin Teofanovic each made their respective collegiate debuts, but were unable to claim a singles win on Friday.

The men's team concluded a long and chilly day against Northwestern in a pair of doubles matchups. Gutierrez Crowley and Mamalat held on for an 8-6 win over the Wildcat duo of Alex Pasareanu and Tobias Reitz at the No. 1 position. Sophomore Thibault Troude and Teofanovic also claimed an 8-3 decision in their first outing as a tandem.

The women's squad was swept in doubles action against nationally ranked South Carolina before concluding the afternoon with singles competition versus Western Michigan. Senior transfer Kristina Radan rallied for a win (5-7, 6-4, 1-0) over WMU's Kathleen Hawkins, earning a win in the second set before outlasting her opponent in the super tiebreaker. Also earning victories for Marquette were senior Olga Fischer and freshman Ali Dawson, who downed Jill Pastunink of WMU 6-3, 6-4 for her first collegiate victory.

Action continues Saturday morning with both singles and doubles action.
