Marquette Tennis Opens 2008-09 At Milwaukee Tennis Classic Friday

ELM GROVE, Wis. - The Marquette University men's and women's tennis teams began their respective 2008-09 campaigns with opening serves Friday afternoon at the 33rd Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic, hosted by MU and the Western Racquet Club.
The eight-team field was treated to a picture-perfect day in Southeastern Wisconsin. Marquette, Ball State, Northwestern and Wisconsin are competing on the men's side while the Golden Eagles welcome Alabama, Texas A&M and the Badgers in women's action as well.
Each team is competing in singles and doubles action and a post system will be used to determine the weekend's champions on Sunday afternoon when the three-day event concludes.
The MU women opened action with three doubles matches versus Alabama. The Crimson Tide claimed two of the three contests, with Marquette's tandem of Maggie Wilson and newcomer Gillian Hush posting an 8-6 win over Taylor Lindsey and Bianca Svensson.
The Marquette women's squad took on Texas A&M in singles matches to wrap up day one's action.
Marquette's men's team opened play against head coach Steve Rodecap's alma mater, Ball State. Junior Dusan Medan picked up where he left off in 2007-08 when he led the team in singles wins, making quick work of BSU's Jorge Rodriguez 6-0, 6-3. Freshman Drake Kakar picked up his first career victory, downing Jon Wegener of BSU 6-1, 6-3.
MU took on instate rival Wisconsin in doubles action to conclude the afternoon. The Badgers claimed victories at the top two positions, but MU's Mark Rutherford and Jonathan Schwerin were victorious at the third position, downing their opponents 8-5. Juan-Martin Paredes and freshman J.T. Christian also posted a win, earning an 8-4 victory over Ball State.
The Milwaukee Tennis Classic continues Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with singles and doubles play.
