ELM GROVE, Wis. - The Marquette men's and women's tennis teams concluded day two at the 32nd Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic Saturday at the Western Racquet Club.
The MU men faced DePaul in singles action in the early session and was able to come away victorious in two matches over the Blue Demons. Sophomore Dusan Medan defeated Vanja Grgec, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) while freshman Graydon Klassen took care of Tim Cadet, 6-1, 6-3.
The Golden Eagles picked it up in doubles and captured three wins from Ball State. Senior Brett Binkley and sophomore Mark Rutherford teamed to take down Jose Perdomo and Jarrod Epkey, 8-3. The duo of sophomore Niko Boulieris and senior Pete Van Lieshout followed with a 8-4 victory over Bret Berryman and Shaun Bussert, 8-4. In MU's final doubles match of the day, senior Greg Sirotek and Klassen held on for a 9-7 decision over Daniel Vidal and Jimmy Brannon.
"The season is early and we know there is room for improvement," said head coach Steve Rodecap. "We struggled a bit in singles, but came out strong in doubles after not playing particularly well this morning. We found ways to win this afternoon."
On the women's side, the Marquette women struggled against Alabama as sophomore Elly Strother was the lone Golden Eagle to garner a win early. Strother downed Allison Nolen, 6-2, 6-3.
Later in the afternoon, the Golden Eagles, much like the men, faired better in doubles competition taking three of four matches from Wisconsin. Senior duo Maria Calbeto and Shannon Brown shut down Elizabeth Carpenter and Jessica Seyferth. Senior Erin Watkins and sophomore Kylie Moore surrendered just a point to their Badger counterparts Elizabeth Dolan and Katya Mirnova defeating the pair 8-1. The freshmen twosome of Christina Ruiz and Rachael Hush concluded doubles play with a thrilling 9-7 win over Chelsea Nusslock and Morgan Tuttle.
The Golden Eagles will wrap-up play at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic Sunday. Matches are set to begin at 9 a.m.
