Tennis Caps Day Two at Milwaukee Tennis Classic
Sept. 23, 2008
ELM GROVE, Wis. - It was another beautiful day at Western Racquet Club where the Marquette University men's and women's tennis teams capped day two of competition at the 33rd Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
The Golden Eagle men competed in singles against Northwestern and doubles against Ball State.
Against Northwestern, Marquette took three wins from the Wildcats. Trent Hagan made quick work of Alex Sanborn, 6-1, 6-1, as did Juan Martin Paredes against Philip Kafka, 6-2, 6-2. Stephan Shao and Mark Rutherford pulled off come-from-behind victories after losing their first sets. Shao and Rutherford each won their second-set wins to force tie-breakers. Shao took down Andrew MCarthy, 6-7, 6-2 (10-6), and Rutherford defeated Tobias Reitz, 3-6, 6-3 (10-6).
MU rounded out day two of competition with strong doubles performance against Ball State claiming two of three wins. Shao teamed with Dusan Medan to dominate Jorge Rodriquez and Jose Perdomo, 8-2. J.T. Christian and Drake Kakar followed with an 8-4 win over Derek Carpenter and Jon Wegener.
On the women's side, the Golden Eagles faired better against their Alabama counterparts than they did against Texas A&M on Friday winning two matches against the Crimson Tide. Freshman Paola Calderon won her first match as a Golden Eagle when she downed Paulina Bigos, 6-1, 6-4. Classmate Gillian Hush also tallied her first win at Marquette in thrilling fashion as she bounced back from losing her first set 6-3, to win the second, 6-3, and the tie-breaker, 11-9.
Robin Metzler and Rachael Hush put in strong performances against the Crimson Tide, but fell short. Both Metzler and Hush lost the first set of their matches, rallied to win the second, but lost their tie-breakers 10-8.
Marquette got little rest before taking on Wisconsin in doubles immediately following its matches with Alabama and faltered in all three matches.
The third and final day of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic begins Sunday at 9 a.m.
