Marquette Opens Play at USAFA Invitational

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--The Marquette University women's tennis squad opened competition at the United States Air Force Academy Invitational with doubles and singles play on Friday.
Freshman Paula Tormos Sanchez led the way for the Golden Eagles with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory over Victoria Pisani of Arkansas State. She advances to face Chole Forlini from Air Force on Saturday.
Junior Erin Gebes dropped a hard fought 6-2, 7-6 (2) decision to Wyoming's Magdalena Stencel, while senior Ali Dawson dropped a three set decision, 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, to Nini Guensler from Utah State. MU will continue singles play on the consolation side of the bracket on Saturday.
Dawson teamed with junior Aleeza Kanner in doubles play, while Gebes and Tormos joined forces. Each pair fell in their match and will be back in action tomorrow.
Following play on Friday, the Golden Eagles were able to tour the Air Force Academy under sunny skies.
Play begins at 9 a.m. Mountain time at the Academy outdoor tennis courts.
