Women's Tennis Completes Day One at Bronco Invitational

The Marquette women's tennis team concluded day one of competition at the Bronco Invitational Friday. Juniors Elly Strother and Maggie Wilson, and freshman Paola Calderon walked away with wins on the first day of play.

In the Black Flight matches, Calderon was victorious in her first match of the day defeating Western Michigan's Amanda Moccia, 6-3, 6-3. She had a tougher time with Joanna Craven of Purdue in her second match of the day falling 6-2, 6-3. Calderon will face another Boliermaker in Stephanie Wooten when play resumes Saturday.

Sophomore Rachael Hush lost in a tie-breaker to Indiana State's Sarah Meghoufel, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-9) in her first match and moved into the consolation bracket where she dropped to Purdue's Michelle Sammons, 6-0, 6-3.

In the Gold Flight, freshman Gillian Hush lost her first match to DePaul's Gia McKnight, 6-3, 6-1, and couldn't hold on in her second match of the day falling to Indiana State's Valeriia Petrovych, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7). Hush will face Joanna Woo of Eastern Michigan on Saturday.

Wilson and Strother each claimed wins in the Brown Flight. Strother defeated Gabriela Blaskovcova of West Virginia, 7-6, 6-4, but fell to Blue Demon Sandra Zmak, 6-1, 6-0.

Wilson advanced to the semifinals of the Brown flight with a win over Purdue's Kay Kay Magi, 6-0, 6-3, and came from behind to defeat Cali Gustafson of DePaul, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5). Wilson will face Eastern Michigan's Marcela Rivero Saturday.

In doubles competition, the Golden Eagle duo of junior Robin Metzler and Rachael Hush defeated Indiana State's Petrovych and Lifanova, 8-6. Sophomore Christina Ruiz and Calderon fell to DePaul's McKnight and Milinkovic, 8-4, and Wilson and Gillian Hush dropped to Western Michigan's Pahl and Matsuto, 8-0.

Day two of competition at the Bronco Invitational will begin at 9 a.m. ET Saturday.
