Marquette Opens Play at the Cal Nike Invitational

BERKELEY, Calif. --The Marquette women's tennis team opened play at the Cal Nike Invitational on Friday with two rounds of singles and one round of doubles in each of three flights in day one of competition that began at 8:15 a.m. PT.
Pimienta defeated Sacramento's Katharina Knoebl, 7-6 (5), 6-3, but dropped a hard-fought decision to Andrea Kad from USF, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-1, in the next round of 16 in the Blue Singles draw. In blue doubles, Pimienta teamed up with sophomore Erin Gebesas they fell to a ranked duo from St. Mary's, 8-4.
In White Singles round of 32, junior Ali Dawson defeated Monika Magusiak from Nevada, 6-3, 6-0 and followed with an equally dominate victory over BYU's Demi Daniels, 6-3, 6-0 to conclude the day 2-0.
In the same draw, Hernandez Soler opened with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Nikki Wolny from Santa Clara, but dropped her round of 16 match, 6-4, 6-3.
After falling in her round of 32 opening match in the gold singles draw, sophomore Erin Gebes advanced in the consolation bracket. Senior Rocio Diaz and sophomore Vanessa Foltingerjoined to defeat a duo from Santa Clara in the opening round of gold doubles, 8-5. They will play in the next round on Saturday.
Saturday's competition will have two rounds of doubles and just one singles round at the two locations on California's campus beginning at 8:15 a.m. PT.
