Women's Tennis Opens Play at Wolverine Invitational

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team opened play at Michigan's Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich. Friday with Elly Strother capturing two wins for the Golden Eagles in the Wolverine Draw. Christina Ruiz and Rachael Hush each added Marquette victories in the Blue Draw. All three MU doubles teams tallied wins.
In the Blue Draw, Christina Ruiz defeated Eastern Michigan's Karina Ahuja (6-0, 6-3) to advance to the next round, where she fell to Purdue's Bhavani Tirumurti (6-1, 6-3). Rachael Hush added a Marquette win over Purdue's Remi Martin (6-3, 6-1), but could not take down Michigan's Mimi Nguyen in the second round (6-4, 6-4). Gillian Hush fell in the first round to Tania Mahtani (6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (7)). Kelly Barry rallied in the second set, but eventually fell to Southern Carolina's Jossy Andersson (5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (7)).
In the Blue Consolation Draw, G. Hush fell in the first set, but reclaimed the match against Maria Nivia (4-6, 6-4, (6)). Barry also advanced, tallying two 6-1 wins over Miami's Brittney Larson.
With Golden Eagles Maggie Wilson and Elly Strother competing in the Wolverine Draw, Wilson fell to Michigan's Kari Wig (6-1, 6-2) while Strother advanced past Eastern Michigan's Marcela Rivero (7-6, 6-1) and Miami of Ohio's Riekie Honiball (7-6, 3-6, (8)). Strother's two wins in regular play were the most by any Golden Eagle in action Friday. Wilson fell in the Wolverine Consolation Draw to Parr (6-1, 6-1).
In doubles action Friday, all three Marquette teams came out on top with Wilson/Strother defeating Michigan's Fournier/Wig (8-3), R. Hush/Ruiz tallying a dominating 8-1 win over WMU's Dudzik/Nivia, and G. Hush/Barry capturing an 8-4 victory against Miami's Honiball/Wald.
Action in singles and doubles play continues Saturday and Sunday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
