Marquette Opens Play at the Wildcat Invitational

TUSCON, Ariz. -The Marquette University women's tennis squad opened competition at the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Arizona on Friday morning. The Golden Eagles were stellar in singles matches picking up multiple victories in the first day's action.
Junior Erin Gebes earned consecutive singles victories in the tournament's opening day. She defeated Eva Mencl from Texas State, 6-4, 6-4 and followed that with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 decision to advance over Briar Preston from host Arizona. Junior Vanessa Foltinger also won back-to-back singles matches with ease defeating Jordan Denesik of Northern Arizona, 6-3, 6-1 before besting Shannon Becket of Texas State, 6-2, 6-0.
Senior Ana Pimienta dropped her first singles match of the day, but rebounded with an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory over Northern Arizona's Marta Lewandowska. Classmate Ali Dawson also had a singles win for the day with a 6-3, 6-2 decision in her first match against Daphne Fischer of UTEP. Sophomore Diana Tokar had a 6-1, 6-1 victory in her second singles match of the day, while freshman Paula Tormos Sanchez played one singles match and walked away with a 6-7, 6-1, 6-0 decision.
Gebes and Pimienta returned to their usual pairing in doubles and earned an 8-3 victory over New Mexico. Tormos Sanches and Vanessa Foltinger also won their doubles match with an 8-3 decision as well.
Play will continue in Arizona on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 11:00 a.m. CT for the 2014 Wildcat Invitational.
