Oct. 23, 2009
The Marquette women's tennis team continued a strong showing at the 2009 ITA Midwest Regionals Friday, as freshman Kelly Barry won her second consecutive match to advance to the main draw, joining sophomore Paola Calderon.
Barry defeated Michigan State's Amy Barton to advance to the main draw, winning 6-1, 7-6 (4).
In the main draw to begin Friday, Calderon will take on Illinois's Brianna Smutko, while Barry will face off against Notre Dame's Kristin Rafael. Smutko, like Barry, advanced out of the qualifying bracket with a bye and two wins. The match against Barry will be Rafael's first of the regionals.
In the first day of doubles play, juniors Rachael Hush and Christina Ruiz defeated YSU's Sarah Lynch-Gretchen Cloern, 8-3, after a first round bye. Hush-Ruiz will take on Northwestern's Elana Chernyakova and Lauren Lui in the next round. The doubles pair of sophomore Gillian Hush and senior Maggie Wilson also advanced after a first round bye, tallying a 9-8 victory over Akron's A. Jogasuria-Prang Pantusart. Hush-Wilson will next face off against Michigan's Rika Tatsuno and Whitney Taney.
