Women's Tennis Opens Purdue Invitational With Three Singles Wins

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team opened play at the Purdue Invitational Friday with three singles wins and four doubles victories in the last fall tournament of the season. Sophomores Paola Calderon and Gillian Hush and junior Christina Ruiz all tallied wins over Purdue. Calderon defeated Boilermaker Michelle Sammons in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, while Christina Ruiz and Gillian Hush defeated Kay Kay Magi and Remi Martin, respectively, in two sets each. Martin only recorded two total points against the sophomore. In doubles play, Calderon teamed with classmate Olga Fischer to tally two doubles wins, over Purdue's Martin-Anna Dushkina, 9-7, and Penn State's Sarah Henderson-Maria Prishylak, 8-3. Juniors Rachael Hush and Ruiz partnered to defeat Amy Simidian-Lauren McCarthy of PSU, 8-5. Gillian Hush paired with Maggie Wilson to register a convincing 8-1 win over Penn State's Allie Hefter-Kristen Roth.
