Jan. 15, 2016
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s tennis team returns to action for the spring portion of its schedule when the squad travels to Bloomington, Indiana to compete in the Hoosier Winter Classic Jan. 16-18.
Marquette will join Abilene Christian, Wright State and host Indiana in the three-day competition to kick off the spring season. Head coach Jody Bronson is in the midst of her 31st season with the program and looking forward to yet another successful campaign.
The Golden Eagles welcome back a healthy mix of youth and veteran leadership as seniors Erin Gebes and Aleeza Kanner lead a talented group. Junior Diana Tokar and sophomore Paula Tormos Sanchez also return alongside a freshmen trio of Silvia Ambrosio, Leoni Daems and Courtney Hebard.
In the fall, the Golden Eagles concluded competition with a successful run at the Western Michigan Super Challenge back in November. On day one, the duo of Erin Gebes and Silvia Ambrosio cruised to a runner-up finish in doubles competition, defeating the pairing from Iowa, 6-2, before falling in a close 6-4 decision to Indiana in the championship match.
Other highlights from the team’s last competition was sophomore Paula Tormos Sanchez winning her third-place match in Flight C, while Diana Tokar took home the consolation title in Flight B.
This weekend’s action at Indiana will precede the team’s first dual competition of the season when they host Milwaukee and IUPUI on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Central time, respectively.
