MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's tennis team will take to the road to begin the dual match portion of its season with a pair of matches against Minnesota and Montana on Saturday, Jan. 19 and Sunday, Jan. 20, respectively. Both contests will be played at Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center and begin at 11 a.m.
Free video and live scoring will be available on GopherSports.com for MU's match against Minnesota.
Marquette opened up its spring schedule last weekend (Jan. 11-13) at the Adidas IU Winter Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. Junior Rocio Diaz went a perfect 2-0 in singles action and partnered with freshman Erin Gebes to capture doubles wins on days one and two.
Last season, the Golden Eagles posted a 12-11 overall mark in dual matches. Diaz is the top-returning letterwinner from the 2012 dual season. The junior earned 13 singles victories last spring and was a combined 9-3 when playing in the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions.
Minnesota enters the dual season ranked No. 41 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) preseason poll. In 2012, the Gophers went 16-9 in their campaign and advanced to the NCAA tournament, where they fell to No. 28 Arizona, 4-1, in the opening round.
Montana has a trio of players represented in the ITA's Mountain Region rankings. Sophomore Haley Driver is tabbed as the No. 18 singles player in the region, while classmate Laurence Pelchat and senior Heather Davidson earned a No. 10 ranking in doubles. The Grizzles were 14-8 in dual matches in 2012.
After the pair of contests in Minneapolis, Marquette will return to Bloomington, Ind., for a dual match with the Hoosiers on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. CT.
