Jan. 21, 2010

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's tennis team will open its dual season Friday, Jan. 22 against UIC and Villanova, and continue the opening weekend with a match against Louisville on Sunday, Jan. 24. All matches will be played at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

Play on Friday will begin at 11 a.m. against UIC, and end against the Wildcats at 5 p.m. Doubles play against Louisville will commence at 10 a.m. Sunday.

Head coach Jody Bronson returns eight players from last season's squad, which finished 17-10. Marquette graduated Robin Metzler, who led the team with 17 overall wins, but returns over 80 percent of singles victories. Sophomore Olga Fischer is the top returning singles player, with an overall 16-10 record, trailed closely by classmates Paola Calderon and Gillian Hush, who tallied 14 singles wins each. Sophomore Gillian Hush and her sister, junior Rachael Hush, led the Golden Eagles in doubles play in 2008-09 with a 14-5 record.

The Golden Eagles had a productive fall tournament season which included three players with winning singles records and two doubles tandems with only one loss.

Freshman Kelly Barry started out her career at Marquette with a strong 9-3 fall record. She was followed by Gillian Hush who went 7-5 in the fall and Christina Ruiz with a 6-5 fall mark.

In doubles play, the duo of Rachael Hush and Christina Ruiz won the doubles title at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic and finished the fall season 8-1 overall, while Calderon and Fischer teamed to produce a 5-1 fall record in doubles play.

UIC capped off the 2008-09 season with its 13th consecutive Horizon League title, and a berth to the NCAA Tournament where the Flames fell to Notre Dame in the first round. Sophomore Mariya Kovaleva is the reigning 2009 Horizon League Player of the Year, and also captured the Newcomer of the Year honors in her first season. Coached by five-time Horizon League Coach of the Year Shannon Tully, the Flame finished last season 15-8, including a 4-3 win over Marquette to open the spring season.

Villanova, who finished last season with just one dual win, will travel to Milwaukee after facing Marquette on neutral courts in 2009. Last February, the Golden Eagles tallied a 7-0 win over the Wildcats.

The Cardinals finished last season third at the BIG EAST Championships with an 11-14 spring team record.

The Golden Eagles defeated then-No. 42 Louisville last season in Milwaukee, 4-3.
